Selling a family member’s home

Usually when you sell a house you are headed to a new one so there’s a part of the process that is exciting but there’s no excitement when you are selling a home because your loved one has gone to assisted living or has died. In these situations, there are often multiple people involved in the process and one or more might not even live locally. Perhaps you lived in the house many years ago when you were a kid or perhaps you have never resided there. Either way, it’s less likely that you have intimate knowledge of the house like you have with your own home.

In addition to selling the house, you probably need to empty it and distribute the personal belongings. This can be a daunting task. Not only do you have to go through all the furniture and personal items and find new homes for them, you also probably have to shift through tons of files, photos and personal documents. This job can take months to accomplish. You have to decide whether you are going to hire an estate sale company or a senior moving service to help with the process and you also have to determine if a junk removal service is needed. Once the house is emptied, it will likely need a thorough cleaning. Depending on past upkeep, you could be looking at tackling some repair projects prior to listing.

We will help you navigate all these steps. We have a list of recommended estate sales people, movers, contractors, cleaners. We can meet service providers at the house if needed. Bottom line, we do whatever is needed to help you get the house ready to list!

When we work with clients who are selling a family member’s home we take special care to diplomatically navigate the family dynamics that exist and step in and assist with the parts of the process that are harder because you aren’t living in the house. We understand that this process is fraught with emotion and can be particularly stressful. We will go as quickly or as slowly as you want to go.
